Overview of Trauma & PTSD

Trauma is a deeply distressing experience that can affect your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

For some, the effects of trauma fade over time. But for others, it can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a serious mental health condition that causes symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety disorders.

While trauma itself is deeply distressing, PTSD amplifies its effects. You may feel hypervigilant, living in a constant state of fight or flight that’s easily triggered. This disrupts daily life and relationships, preventing you from living in the moment or enjoying it.

We offer trauma-focused therapies that help people recover from both trauma and PTSD. With the right support, healing is possible, and you can regain control of your life.

What Causes Trauma & PTSD?

PTSD develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as serious injury, violence, or a life-threatening situation.

Health care providers don’t fully understand why some people develop PTSD while others do not. Several factors likely contribute, including the severity of the trauma, past experiences, and a person’s mental health history.

The brain’s response to stress, genetics, and changes in how the brain processes fear and emotions may also play a role. Some people may have higher levels of stress hormones, which can lead to lasting symptoms like hyperarousal and flashbacks.

Trauma isn’t limited to a single cause — many life experiences can trigger it, including car accidents, sexual assaults, health problems, and natural disasters. Anyone can experience trauma and develop PTSD, though certain factors increase the likelihood.

Risk Factors for Trauma & PTSD

Anyone of any age, gender, race, or background, can experience trauma and go on to develop PTSD. But certain situations increase the risk of developing PTSD, including:

  • Severity and duration of one or more traumatic events
  • Being physically hurt during a traumatic event
  • Pre-existing mental health conditions like anxiety or depression
  • First responders, military personnel, and others in high-risk occupations often face repeated exposure to traumatic situations
  • A weak support system from family members or friends can increase stress after trauma
  • Misuse of drugs or alcohol may raise the risk of developing PTSD
  • Having family members with mental health conditions increases your PTSD chances

Who Is Affected by Trauma & PTSD?

PTSD affects millions of people in the U.S., though certain groups of people may experience it more than others.

Key findings on the prevalence of PTSD include:

  • About 6% of U.S. adults will experience PTSD at some point in their lives.
  • Around 5% of adults have PTSD in any given year, affecting 13 million Americans.
  • Approximately 8% of women and 4% of men will experience PTSD during their lifetime.
  • Veterans and service members who’ve been to war zones face higher trauma risk.
  • PTSD prevalence tends to increase with age until 59, then decreases substantially.

PTSD might be underreported because not everyone gets diagnosed or remembers their symptoms. Wars in certain countries, pandemics, or natural disasters also increase the number of people at risk.

Signs & Symptoms of Trauma & PTSD

PTSD symptoms vary from person to person, but they generally fall into four main categories:

  • Intrusive traumatic memories: Including flashbacks, nightmares, and distressing or negative thoughts.
  • Avoidance: You may avoid people, places, memories or activities that remind you of the trauma.
  • Negative changes in thinking and mood: This includes feelings of guilt, fear, or shame, or feeling detached from loved ones.
  • Changes in physical and emotional reactions: You may be easily startled, have trouble sleeping, or engage in self-destructive behaviors.

Symptoms can fluctuate in intensity over time, worsening when under stress or when reminded of the event.

Interventions like talk therapy, cognitive processing therapy (CPT), or prolonged exposure therapy may help manage these symptoms by addressing the root causes of the trauma.

What Happens When Trauma & PTSD Go Untreated?

If trauma is left untreated, symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, and anxiety can get worse. This can make daily tasks, like going to the store or socializing, feel overwhelming and difficult.

Untreated trauma and PTSD can also cause physical health problems, such as headaches, stomach issues, and heart disease. It may strain relationships with family and friends and lead to feelings of anger or isolation. Some people may turn to substance abuse to cope, which can lead to addiction.

Without treatment, recovery can take much longer, and the effects of PTSD can impact your work, relationships, and overall well-being.
